{"id":29620,"date":"2020-07-23T09:33:05","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T09:33:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iecoinstitute.org\/?p=10548"},"modified":"2023-06-14T08:26:33","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T08:26:33","slug":"whats-not-being-taught-to-future-leaders-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iecoinstitute.org\/en\/whats-not-being-taught-to-future-leaders-3\/","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s not being taught to future leaders?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"entradilla\">How to know their inherent dignity<\/h4>\n<h4 class=\"subtitle\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Educational system has failed students by not helping them know \u2018the world within,\u2019 expert Donna Hicks says.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>As an international affairs professor,\u00a0<strong>Donna Hicks tells her students stories of a world fraught with conflict and reconciliation,<\/strong>\u00a0serious topics her students said they had never encountered or cared for so deeply before.<\/p>\n<p>A key to resolving these international crises, which she can be seen even on a micro level in any society, is\u00a0<strong>recognizing the inherent dignity of every person,<\/strong>\u00a0especially the future leaders of the world, Hicks said.\u00a0<strong>She spoke at a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/iecoinstitute.org\/en\/coloquios\/educating-millennials-for-ethical-leadership-and-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017 Spring International Colloquium<\/a>\u00a0organized by the IECO Institute at Harvard Campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Hicks is an associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recognition of that inherent dignity,\u00a0<strong>the \u201cdeeper, more inner level of what it means to be a human being,\u201d has been ignored for far too long, she said.<\/strong>\u00a0Answering the question \u201cWhat\u2019s missing in educating future leaders?\u201d Hicks said her students always tell her they care about \u201cdeeper human issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Identifying with a concept by Sir Ken Robinson, that\u00a0<strong>human beings live in two worlds, the world around and the world within,<\/strong>\u00a0Hicks said her students innately \u201cwant to understand what it means to be human.\u201d They seek something deeper than self-knowledge about their own individual desires, she said.\u00a0<strong>According to Hicks, education has taught today\u2019s students so much about the world around them, but not how to understand that \u201cworld within.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this inner world of ours?
